Why "Alkas"?

A name rooted in ancient tradition and reverence for nature

The Sacred Grove

In Lithuanian, alkas means "sacred grove" - a place where ancient Baltic people gathered to honor nature, observe the changing seasons, and connect with the living world around them.

These groves were spaces of learning and reverence, where knowledge of the natural world was passed down through generations. We chose this name because Alkas is about building that same deep connection with the species that share our world.

Zali, guardian of the Alkas - a mystical green forest spirit

Zali is the guardian of the Alkas. The name comes from Žaliukas, Lithuanian for "little green one" - a spirit of the forest who watches over all living things.

As you build your knowledge of wildlife, one species at a time, think of Zali as your guide through the sacred grove - helping you notice what you might have missed, and remember what you've learned.

Our Philosophy

Knowing the names of the species around you transforms how you experience the world. A walk through the park becomes richer when you can identify the birds by their songs, the trees by their leaves, the insects visiting the flowers. Alkas is here to help you build that knowledge - not through cramming, but through the gentle, effective rhythm of spaced repetition.
